Calabrese Parthenon F1 produces impressively large, domed heads with fine beads and a superb flavour. Earlier and longer cropping than many traditional varieties, it gives a generous harvest for steaming, stir-frying, roasting or serving simply with a little butter. After cutting the main head, leave the plants in place to encourage useful side shoots for further pickings.

Sow indoors February-June in trays of seed compost at around 15°C. Alternatively sow outdoors March-May in a seed bed, around 1.5cm deep. Keep the compost or soil moist and transplant seedlings to their final position when large enough to handle, allowing around 60cm each way. Water well until established and during dry weather. Harvest June-November, cutting the central head first and allowing side shoots to develop for further pickings.
