Grow a colourful selection of delicious aubergines in even the smallest kitchen garden. The attractive, compact plants produce generous crops of glossy fruits in an appealing mixture of colours, each weighing approximately 50-80g/2-3oz. Their convenient size and excellent flavour make them ideal for grilling, roasting and adding to Mediterranean dishes. Grow in a greenhouse or in large containers on a warm, sunny and sheltered patio.

SOW INDOORS January-April, thinly 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in pots or trays of compost. Keep at 20-25°C/68-77°F, reducing the temperature to approximately 15°C/60°F after germination. Transplant seedlings into individual pots at the 2-4 leaf stage. Harden off in early June, then plant into large containers or a greenhouse border, spacing plants 40cm/16in apart. Water well while the fruits develop and apply a liquid feed every 10-14 days. Plants may also be grown outdoors in a warm, sunny and sheltered position.
