Want to know more about our Purple Top Milan turnip seeds? We answer your questions here.
The best time to sow Purple Top Milan turnip seeds is from mid-February under cloches or fleece for early crops ready by May-June, or directly outdoors from March to June for quick summer harvest. Sow seeds thinly 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart, then thin seedlings to 10-15cm between plants once they have two true leaves. This spacing promotes strong, evenly sized roots and good airflow, reducing disease risk.
Lift them when they are tennis ball size for peak mildness and snap. This is usually 40-45 days after sowing and ensures the best-tasting, tender vegetables. For March-June sowings, start picking from May through September; July-August crops come up in October. Twist off the tops right after lifting to stop regrowth, eat the greens like spinach, and store the roots in a cool, dry spot, like a fridge drawer, to enjoy for weeks.
Plant with peas, beans, lettuce, or onions for mutual benefits, such as pest deterrence and improved soil health. Rotate away from other brassicas and the cabbage family to prevent clubroot buildup over seasons.
