Grow a prized Italian heirloom loved by gardeners and cooks for its beautiful colouring and mild, creamy flesh. The rounded fruits are marbled cream and purple and are ready to harvest at approximately 12cm/5in in diameter. Remarkably free from bitterness, they are delicious grilled, roasted or barbecued. The bushy plants grow particularly well in a greenhouse but can also crop in large patio containers or a warm, sheltered outdoor position.

SOW INDOORS January-March, thinly 0.5cm/quarter-in deep in pots or trays of compost. Keep at 20-25°C/68-77°F, reducing the temperature to approximately 15°C/60°F after germination. Transplant into individual pots at the 2-4 leaf stage. Move into large containers or a greenhouse border, spacing plants approximately 40-45cm/15-18in apart. Plants may also be grown outdoors in a warm, sunny and sheltered position after the risk of frost.
