Well named for it has very long shanks, which are ready in October, but will stand in good condition until the following March. So useful in the kitchen and a good one for exhibition work.

Sow outdoors March-May in a seedbed, 1.5cm/half-inch deep. Thin as necessary. Transplant to growing position in June-July. Water into holes 15cm/6in apart. Spacing of 30cm/1ft between rows. Harvest October-March.
