The distinctive shape and colouration of this variety may seem more ornamental than edible, but Turks Turban is a delicious winter squash for baking, steaming or turning into soup. The trailing plants produce fruits up to 30cm/12in across, the flesh of which is sweet and golden orange. This variety is also a fine 'keeper'.

Characteristics & growing conditions

Position: Dappled Shade, Full Sun, and Partial Shade
Attractive to: Attractive To Bees and Attractive To Butterflies
Sow Indoors : March-May singly on edge in pots. Depth half-inch/1.5cm. Temperature 60-68°F/15-20°C. Harden off late May. Plant out June. Sow Outdoors : May, two seeds per station on edge. Thin out to the strongest seedling when plants are large enough to handle. Spacing 3ft/90cm between plants. Tips : Keep well watered. Pinch out growing tips when 4-5 fruits have set. Harvest before first frosts, will store for many weeks in a cool, dry, frost free location. Harvest : September-October.
