Why spend money on expensive and often artificially preserved bags of mixed salad when you can grow your own far fresher and tastier versions for a fraction of the cost? Growing your own fresh salad leaves is so easy to do and the leaves make excellent cut and come again crops.
If space on the plot is limited, leaves can be grown in containers, growbags, trays and pretty much any other space, as long as the soil is well drained. Growing your own salad leaves is extremely cost effective and offers growers the chance to experiment with different flavours and textures. In recent years we have started to eat a wide range of other salad crops - including Oriental salads which add superb and often subtle flavours. Read more
How to grow Salad Leaves
Salad leaves grow best in full sun, with well drained reasonably fertile soil. We recommend sowing 'little and often' for a continuous supply of fresh salad leaves. Salad leaves will thrive in soil where well-rotted compost or manure (such as Orgro) has been dug in. Keep plants well-watered, especially in dry periods and harvest leaves when they are at desired size. For successful cut and come again crops, harvest leaves individually- taking little but often will keep the plants cropping for longer. Leaves are best when picked and used fresh however, leaves will store in the fridge for several days. Show less
