Also known as 'smallage', the ancient Greeks once used this plant medicinally. Today finely chopped leaves can be added to milk for poaching fish, to salads, stuffings and cream cheese; wild celery also make an attractive garnish. The seed can be ground and used as a substitute for salt.
Sow indoors February to April in trays of seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of compost. Temperature 15-20°C. Keep moist. It may take up to 21 days for seedlings to appear. Thin if necessary. Harden off and transplant to a partially shaded growing position, 20cm apart. Harvest April to November. Sow outdoor March to May in a partially shaded seed bed. Sow thinly in rows 30cm apart. Cover lightly with fine soil. Keep moist. When large enough thin to 20cm apart. Keep moist and weed free. Harvest April to November.
