No kitchen garden is complete without some of the most popular, culinary herbs. Whether they are grown in a herb bed or ‘wheel’, in patio containers or pots on a sunny windowsill, they are invaluable for adding flavour to a whole host of home cooked dishes. This unique collection contains 10 of the most popular perennial kitchen herb varieties:
French Tarragon - A delicious herb and great paired with chicken and fish. Also add a few sprigs to flavour vinegar to make a superb salad dressing. Very difficult to grow from seeds.
Hyssop - This attractive, decorative plant is good in borders, and, if planted near cabbage, may draw cabbage white butterflies away! The purple flowers look good in salads, while the leaves can be used (sparingly) with fatty meat dishes. They are also delicious in lamb casserole and vegetable soup. Both flowers and leaves are good in pot pourri. Height: 80cm/32in.
Lemon Verbena - large shrub giving sweet lemony flavor and scent each time it is touched. Perfect choice for planting near paths or in containers on the patio. Can be moved indoor when planted in pots as it needs frost-free conditions. Will need free draining rather poor soil. Will not grow in damp conditions.
Sweet Marjoram - This dainty, half-hardy herb, a cousin of oregano, has a spicy-sweet flavour. Its leaves can be infused to create a fragrant tisane or chopped into salads. Blend them with butter to create a tasty fish for sauce, or add to meat casseroles immediately before serving. The leaves can be added to pot pourri or herb pillows. Height: 30cm/12in.
Garden Mint - Full of flavour and superb with lamb and new potatoes – try adding to salads too. Can be invasive so best planted in pots where it's growth can be restricted.
Oregano - The classic pizza herb and redolent of so much Mediterranean cooking. No self-respecting herb garden should be without oregano, which also grows well in pots. Height: 60cm/24in.
Rosemary - A strong and aromatic herb traditionally used in Greek and Italian cooking - perfect for pasta sauces and lamb dishes.
Sage - A wonderful foil to the fattiness of pork and used in most 'herby' sausages. Sage butter and sage vinegar are just two of its many uses. Height: 60cm/24in.
Savory - perennial, stronger than summer savory with fine narrow leaves available over a long season. Height: 30cm/12in.
Thyme - Is any herb more useful than thyme? Great in sauces, soups, stuffings, and perfect added to food cooked in wine. Bees love the flowers. Height: 20cm/8in.
