This cross between a runner and a French bean has taken many years to develop, but the wait was worth it. The pink and red flowers, which make Tenderstar attractive enough to be regarded as ornamental, set as easily as those of French types, while the handily-sized, 6in long, tender pods are produced in abundant clusters, and have all the succulence, texture and taste of the best runners.
SOW OUTDOORS in May-July, 2in/5cm deep in double rows, 1ft/12in apart. SOW INDOORS in April-May, singly in pots of compost, 1in/2.5cm deep. Harden off from late May, Transplant to final position in June. Spacing 8in/20cm. Harvest July onwards. Harvest regularly to encourage a continuous supply of beans.
