These delicious flageolet beans are a real treat, whether picked young and tender, rather like small broad beans, or left to mature for drying and storing for future use. The young beans, often eight per pod, also freeze well, and are quite delicious. The plants have very good disease resistance.
Sow outdoors Mid April-June, in final position. Depth 2in/5cm. Rows Double rows, 45cm/18in apart. Sow Indoors April-May under cloches or in trays in a greenhouse. Protect from frost. Harden off/plant out Late May-June. Thin to 30cm/12in between plants. Harvest Late August onwards. Pick regularly to encourage a continuous supply of beans. Keep down weeds and water well in dry periods.
