A great favourite thanks to the heavy crop of tasty, stringless, pencil-podded beans it produces for several weeks through the summer. The pods are slow to grow old, but shell the white beans from any which do swell, dry them and you have them as haricots to use long after the plants have gone.
Sow Indoors April - May, in pots or trays of moist compost. Temperature 60°F /15°C, keep moist. Seeds germinate within 7-14 days. Harden off from May. Transplant 10in/25cm apart , to final position after risk of frost. 18in/45cm between rows. Sow outdoors May-early July in their final position, 2 seeds per position. Depth 5cm/2in. Harvest June onwards until first frosts.
