Featuring the famed ‘The Kelsae’ onion, our Gourmet Onion Collection will appeal both to gourmets with a thriving kitchen garden and to those who enjoy ‘growing for the show’!
Individually modular grown to minimise root disturbance, we nurture them over winter and manage all stages of production for you. At the transplanting stage (around the middle of April), they are carefully hand packed, wrapped and delivered to you for immediate planting. You’ll also receive a growing guide to help you get the best possible results.
The collection consists of 60 module grown plants, 20 each of:
Onion The Kelsae - Around show circles, The Kelsae has a reputation that is second to none. The first choice of growers who wish to exhibit huge onions, this unique variety is a regular winner in the NVS ‘large exhibition’ and ‘1kg to 1.5kg’ onion classes. The Kelsae has had an unrivalled pedigree for many years, culminating in success at this years’ NVS National Championships in 3 classes. However, unlike many large show varieties, it has a wonderful sweet flavour even when large and is superb for cooking or eating raw in salads. Traditionally sown on Boxing Day, we manage all stages of production for you until the transplanting stage.
Disaster struck in September when our entire 2016 crop of The Kelsae onion was destroyed in the field by a freak hailstorm. We managed to save enough plants to protect the breeding stock, but it meant that we have had no packet seed available for sale this season. Luckily, we did have some old seed left from last year and whilst it wasn’t suitable for packet seed sale, due to variable germination, it was perfectly good seed to sow for plants.
Onion Tough Ball F1-Tough Ball is the mainstay of the <250g onion class at shows throughout the country. A winning entry in 2 classes at this years’ NVS Championships, with G Wagstaffe picking up first prize in the <250g class. As well as being the preferred choice of exhibition growers, it is a very tasty variety producing incredibly uniform onions with a strong skin and crisp firm flesh. High yielding and resistant to bolting.
Onion Tasco F1-We’re delighted to have secured this legendary exhibition onion. Thought lost, it was a regular winner in the <250g class back in the day and is rated as the only serious contender to Tough Ball F1. Tasco F1 produces very uniform onions with a smooth skin, silky finish and deep golden-yellow colour. Excellent for eating and storing too, it has crisp white flesh with good flavour and crunch. For exhibiting they should be ready for harvest at approx. 25cm/10in in circumference.
