We like this variety, not only for its healthy yields of almonds, but also for its excellent habit – neat and compact and easy to keep in shape. The leaves are a rich, deep green in colour and are followed by delightful pink blossom in the spring. Self-fertile, the almonds mature over the summer months and are ready for picking in October.
Our patio range of fruit trees is made up of both true genetic dwarf varieties and conventional varieties which are grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks in a special way.
Naturally occurring genetic dwarf fruit trees have been known about for hundreds of years and have been used by gardeners and nurserymen alike. The main characteristics of genetic dwarfism in fruit trees are very short internodes shown on the branches, full size flowers and full size leaves, and most importantly, full size fruits.
Creating very compact trees by utilising special grafting technics has been carried out for a very long time indeed by exploiting much of what has been learned over the years of rootstock and scion interaction. Dwarfing rootstocks are utilised and these are budded very high with the scion variety, chosen for their naturally occurring compact habit, to create even more dwarfing characteristics for the whole tree. The resulting trees can be planted to best effect in large pots and a suitable regime of root pruning can be carried out to maintain the dwarf appearance. Similarly, root pruning technics can be employed in the open ground to very great effect. Couple this with a little shoot pinching in spring and summer and the result is perfect for interest and variety in all gardens.
All patio fruit trees will be supplied in 4.5 litre pots (with the exception of Patio Peach Crimson Bonfire) and will come with a full growing guide.
