Description
When first bred this Cherry set the benchmark for all others to follow! A first-rate variety for growing on the patio, with a naturally slow growing compact habit and a profusion of blossom in spring which readily sets fruit. Hartland is as sweet and black as any grown and a delight to eat. It might be worth considering netting the tree just as the fruits start to colour – this will prevent the birds from pinching them! Harvest: from mid July.
Our patio range of fruit trees is made up of both true genetic dwarf varieties and conventional varieties which are grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks in a special way. Naturally occurring genetic dwarf fruit trees have been known about for hundreds of years and have been used by gardeners and nurserymen alike. The main characteristics of genetic dwarfism in fruit trees are very short internodes shown on the branches, full size flowers and full size leaves, and most importantly, full size fruits. Creating very compact trees by utilising special grafting technics has been carried out for a very long time indeed by exploiting much of what has been learned over the years of rootstock and scion interaction. Dwarfing rootstocks are utilised and these are budded very high with the scion variety, chosen for their naturally occurring compact habit, to create even more dwarfing characteristics for the whole tree. The resulting trees can be planted to best effect in large pots and a suitable regime of root pruning can be carried out to maintain the dwarf appearance. Similarly, root pruning technics can be employed in the open ground to very great effect. Couple this with a little shoot pinching in spring and summer and the result is perfect for interest and variety in all gardens. Height: 90-120cm/3-4ft All patio fruit trees will be supplied in 4.5 litre pots (with the exception of Patio Peach Crimson Bonfire) and will come with a full growing guide.
