Fig Plant, Chelsea
H: Late August
If you pass over Chelsea bridge heading towards Sloane Square, you will invariably be held at the traffic lights on the junction of the Chelsea Embankment. Look to the West, and on the corner of the bridge set into Joseph Bazalgette's marvelous embankment constructions you will see a huge fig tree. If you are lucky enough to see this tree in late summer, you will often see the flock of Battersea parakeets feeding eagerly on the fruits of this wonderful tree. The tree has been there for many, many years watching the River Thames pass beneath its base and has not only been a feeding place for parakeets, but for the human residents of Chelsea and Battersea. This large green to olive coloured fig has superb flavour and coupled with its marvellous history, makes it an ideal tree for both town and country.
