Crowberry Plant
Crowberry Plant

The crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) is well suited to the UK and grows wild in some regions, although is more widespread in Canada where the fruit can be known as camerines. It's an evergreen, creeping perennial shrub which grows up to 15cm high and the plant enjoys acid peat soils, or acidic sparce soils - or maybe try it in containers. The berries can remain on the plant all winter and are often mixed with other berries of cooked into jelly or pies. In Lapland, crowberries are used as an extender for blueberry products and as a colouring agent. Crowberry is very high in vitamin C and other antioxidants and has significant medicinal properties.
