Growing Basil Seeds

Basil is best grown in warm conditions and does not tolerate cold temperatures very well. Therefore, it is best grown in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill. It can be sown outdoors, though it is best to wait until early summer for the best chance of success.

If sowing indoors, do so in seed trays from late February to mid-summer, keeping them at around 20°C with the help of a garden propagator or covered with a clear plastic bag. Whether started indoors or outdoors, we recommend growing basil in a container, as this helps to protect against slugs and snails while also allowing for free draining. Other than regular watering, they shouldn’t need too much maintenance. Their leaves can then be harvested throughout summer as a cut-and-come-again herb.

Basil is one of the best companion plants you can grow, as it attracts pollinators such as butterflies, which will help many types of vegetable plants. Tomato plants and basil go together beautifully, as growing them together improves the flavour of each plant. Basil also repels harmful insects such as asparagus beetles, mosquitoes, and white flies and draws away aphids from other crops.
