NEW TO D.T. BROWN

42

We are delighted to introduce grafted tomato plants and Italian garlic for the first time.  The grafted tomatoes borrow an idea from commercial horticulture whereby excellent modern hybrids are grafted on to an extra vigorous,  root disease-resistant ‘wild’ rootstocks to ensure stronger plants, heavier crops and a longer cropping period.  The three varieties offered as grafted plants are Shirley F1, Supersteak F1 and Piccolo F1.  Each variety is priced at £9.95 for three plants in 9cm pots, but anyone who buys all nine may do so for £19.90 – a saving of £9.95.

Two new varieties of garlic, Venetian Wight and Tuscany Wight, are perfect for spring planting.  Despite originating in Italy, both have performed well in UK conditions.  Italians are passionate users of garlic and many can tell the variety used in a particular dish.  Venetian Wight is a softneck type which is smaller than some, but has a particularly intense flavour and keeps well.  Tuscany Wight produces large bulbs and is used widely in Umbrian chicken dishes.  Both varieties are priced at £4.95 for two bulbs.

Here’s a new range of plants for you to try taken from commercial horticulture. Grafting is the science of combining two different plants to bring together the best attributes from both onto one plant. Today almost all commercial tomato production in Europe uses grafted plants; you too can do what the professionals do! These grafted plants have a ‘species’ root stock; this is not a commercial variety but a rough, tough wild type that
has great natural vigour and resistance to root diseases. This extra vigour grows through to the hybrid variety on top giving you stronger plants, more fruits, and heavier yields. Some varieties could reach 3m tall given the space! Will they grow outside? They are ideal for greenhouse and tunnel growing and are not recommended for outside cultivation. Why not trial them against your usual tomatoes?

Garlic Venetian Wight
£4.95 per 2 bulbs

This softneck variety has a very dense bulb which has an intense flavour much prized in Umbrian and Tuscan dishes. Although a smaller bulb than some, what it lacks in size it makes up for with flavour. It will keep well to the March the year after harvest.

Garlic, Tuscany Wight
£4.95 per 2 bulbs

Another late type, this variety is widely grown in Tuscany where it suits the warmer summers and cooler winters rather than the blasting heat of southern Italy. This garlic has large cloves and is widely used in Umbrian chicken dishes.
