Asimina ‘triloba’

Asimina ‘triloba’ – Paw Paw also known as the Red Indian’s Banana. An elegant deciduous tree, with long dark green leaves. Maroon flowers are followed by mango like fruit that are bright yellow when ripe. Height: 4.7-6m (15-20ft). Spacing: 4.7-6m (15-20ft). The fruit ripen in October to November, although if growing the plant in a northern area the fruit will ripen in December.

A surprisingly hardy tree that likes full sun and moist, slightly acidic soil. During their early years a degree of shade is required. Their performance is affected by the wind so plant in a protected location. Regular watering is essential. If you want to keep the plant in a ‘tree’ shape remove suckers as they form.

Prior to planting outside, give the plants a thorough watering and fork over the bed in which they are to be planted and incorporate plenty of organic material, humus or well rotted garden compost. To plant, dig a hole slightly larger than the pot and place some well-rotted garden compost, manure or other organic material and bonemeal in the bottom.  Remove the pot, taking care not to damage roots as they are very brittle and place the rootball in the hole, ensuring that the top of the rootball is level with the surrounding soil surface. Back fill with a mixture of soil and well-rotted garden compost and firm well in. Water thoroughly and ensure the plant does not dry out during summer months.
