Growing Herbs from Seed

Sow herb seeds indoors at any time of year. Most herbs need warmth to germinate, so sowing should be kept on a sunny windowsill or in a heated garden propagator until they sprout. Hardy herbs like parsley seeds and chervil seeds can be sown outside in early spring, while tender types such as basil should wait for warmer conditions. Check each seed packet for the best sowing times for your chosen variety.

Start herb seeds in seed trays or small pots using a fine, well-draining seed garden compost. Cover lightly, water gently, and keep in a warm, bright spot until they germinate. Once seedlings have grown strong enough to handle, thin or transplant them to allow room for growth. If you are transplanting them to grow outdoors, gradually harden them off beforehand. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and don’t be afraid to harvest regularly, as it encourages new growth.
